Landslide in Vietnam
The northern mountainous regions of Vietnam experienced heavy rainfall on 2 August 2023, which lasted for several weeks, triggering floods and landslides.
The situation was closely monitored by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Civil Aid Operations (DG ECHO) in the case that the Vietnam Red Cross Society, who were providing food and essential items to 109 affected households, required further assistance.
12 casualties, 5 injured and 3 missing people were reported. However, a total of 30,000 people were affected by the disaster including 2,940 people who were displaced from their homes and relocated to shelters in safer areas.
Officials were urged by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, on 8 August, to mitigate landslides and flood damage. Vietnam faces an extremely high likelihood of flooding - It is ranked 1st alongside Bangladesh in terms of exposure. In addition, Vietnam is ranked 91 out of 191 countries by the 2019 INFORM Risk Index.
