Earthquake in China
On December 18, 2023, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Jishishan county in Linxia, Gansu Province, with a focal depth of 10 km and shockwaves were felt in Lanzhou, the Gansu provincial capital, about 1,450 kilometers (900 miles) southwest of the capital of Beijing.
At least 111 deaths have been reported so far, including 100 in Jishishan County, Gansu Province, and 11 in Minhe County, Qinghai Province and more than 500 injured. Thousands of houses have been reported damaged, and public infrastructure has been damaged to varying degrees.
The National Commission for Disaster Prevention and Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management have upgraded the national emergency response to level II. The quake is the deadliest earthquake in China since the 2010 Yushu quake hit Gansu and Qinghai, which measured 6.9 and killed at least 2,698 people.
