Cyclone Sarai in Fiji
Cyclone Sarai, a category two storm, made landfall on Fiji's southern islands with wind speeds of 170kmh and torrential rain. Two people have been killed and more than 2000 people evacuated.
Central, western and northern divisions of Fiji experienced power cuts, initial reports suggest Viti Levu and the main island will be without power for at least one week. Local newspapers reported many roads have been closed due to fallen trees and high water levels, there are also multiple reports of damage to homes and crops.
As the storm passed, Fiji's National Disaster Management Office is carrying out initial damage assessments on the island of Kadavu. The number of evacuation centres across Fiji has decreased from 52 to 25 with 499 evacuees, down from 1624.
Storm warnings remained in force as Cyclone Sarai continues its easterly path towards Tonga. Formerly a category two system, the cyclone has been downgraded to category one.
