Mudflow in Kyrgyzstan

A state of emergency has been declared in three districts in the northern region of Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan.

From the 18 - 19 August, strong mudflows flooded 497 residential buildings, a nursery, a first aid station and a library. Several holiday resorts and homes were also damaged. The mudflows swamped highways and mountain passes. In the town of Cholpon-Ata, it was reported that water from the canal flooded the streets.

It has been reported that dozens of people have been evacuated from the flooded areas. Approximately 755 rescuers and military personnel are clearing up the damage.

Heavy rains are forecast in the coming days, other parts of Kyrgyzstan, such as Naryn and Jalal-Abad are also prone to mudflows.
