Flood and landslide in Burundi

Torrential rain on 10 February 2014 has caused floods and landslides in Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi. Over fifty people have been killed according to early estimates and hundreds of homes have been affected.

Due to the situation in the city, it is difficult for emergency workers to estimate the full impact of the disaster yet. The landslides have left debris and mud in the city that have buried residents. And roads and power have also been affected.

Bujumbura is located on a flat plain between hills and is situated near a lake. The rain caused water to sweep down the hills and into the city, where some of the poorer districts of the city have homes constructed of mud bricks and were not equipped to deal with the scale of the flooding.
