Cyclone Vaianu in New Zealand
Cyclone Vaianu is expected to hit New Zealand late on 11 April 2026. Forecasts indicate very heavy rainfall of 150–200 mm or more, along with damaging winds and hazardous coastal conditions. Northeasterly waves of 6–8 m are expected, with occasional sets exceeding 11 m and a swell period of 12–14 seconds. Storm surge and coastal inundation are likely, with sea levels expected to rise by around 20–40 cm as the new low centre approaches.
NEMA and the New Zealand Government are on full notice and are urging people to prepare now rather than later. Auckland Emergency Management has activated its Orange emergency warnings and is advising residents to secure property, clear drains, and prepare grab bags. Heavy‑rain and wind warnings currently in place may be upgraded to Red Warnings in the next day or two, particularly for the Coromandel Peninsula, Western Bay of Plenty, and northern Gisborne (Tairāwhiti).
Even if Vaianu weakens before landfall, meteorologists warn that its size and structure mean the impacts are still expected to be severe.
