Flood in Zambia

Zambia faced an increased risk of flooding during the 2025–2026 rainy season following episodes of intense and prolonged rainfall, with Eastern Province among the most affected areas.

On 30 December 2025, Lundazi District experienced severe flooding after several days of heavy rain, causing significant disruption to communities and essential services. Key infrastructure, including bridges and dams, was damaged. Preliminary assessments indicated that approximately 250 households across multiple rural and peri-urban communities were affected, with many experiencing property damage, displacement, and the loss of essential belongings.

National authorities had warned that above-normal rainfall could affect up to 37 districts nationwide, potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of people as rivers overflowed and floodplains became inundated.

The Government of Zambia activated disaster preparedness and response measures, including the pre-positioning of relief supplies. Immediate relief efforts were undertaken, and the situation was closely monitored.
